Looks like maybe a crop from a woodcut illustration showing a sundog or other celestial phenomenon?
It looks like a playing card to me; the two of swords if there are no more on the full image. If you agree say Snap!
Is it part of an illuminated, lattice-work initial letter on parchment?
Possibly a cipher from an illuminated text? I am curious about the Celtic knot and how the sword tips are tucked under one of the gold lines — almost like the swords are peace-tied? Can’t wait to see the full piece!
It’s a Tarot card from one of the old Marseilles decks, which did not use figurative imagery on the equivalent of the pip cards – that came in with the 1909 Rider Waite deck. It’s from the suit of Swords.
A woodcut detail from the 18th century tarot deck? Conver?
Perhaps part of an ornamented border – representing some kind of alliance or campaign? Only one side has swords – might be part of a larger document?
